01Ji Xia has been free for less than ten minutes when the hurricane sirens begin. Luo Sheng smashes an unmarked ambulance through the prison wall.

The camera feed jumps twice. Ji Xia’s ambulance skids out of the garage with its rear door open. The stolen server bangs against a stretcher. Luo Sheng follows in a grey saloon, its windscreen cracked from corner to corner.
“Which way at the next junction?” Ji asks. Her voice is level. Behind it, someone keeps hammering on the rear door.
You open the police traffic map. Three patrol cars block the bridge. The coastal road is clear. Before you can send the turn, a grey dot appears. Its number matches Luo’s plate. There is no pursuit marker beside it, only two words: ASSISTING VEHICLE.
You type: Don’t take the bridge. Then delete it. A lighter clicks on Luo’s channel. He always does that when he is waiting for Ji to agree to something: open, closed, open again.
The pink motel sign bangs against its wall in the wind. Both cars are almost underneath it. The server opens an arrest warrant. Your name is on the first page. The date of issue is tomorrow.
Ji calls again, this time using your call sign. The junction camera begins turning toward the sea. In a few seconds you will lose the only signal through which you can reach them. Your unfinished message still sits in the sending window.
