Story excerpt

01The An Lin on CCTV is three hours ahead, standing before a yellow wall that has never existed in the station.

02The man on-screen turns and presses a finger to his lips. In the real station, every fluorescent light stops humming.

03Someone breathes behind him. On the carpet, only one trail of footprints keeps moving forward.

How you can change the story

01

Trust the voice from three hours ahead

The voice finds an exit; beyond it waits another An Lin who has already waited three hours.

02

Run when the humming stops

He escapes the footsteps and enters a Backrooms level where sound never returns.

03

Turn off the only CCTV monitor

The maze stops predicting him, and he loses the only image proving he exists.

Take the left turn

The Backrooms · 03:17 · About 2–3 minutes · No sign-in

At the ninth fluorescent tube, An Lin finds the stain again: a hand with no thumb. He scratched the wall beside it with his key. His staff badge is now wedged inside that scratch.

The plastic sleeve is warm. In the photograph, his eyes are closed.

“Don’t look at it,” the radio says. His own voice, a little hoarser than usual. “Take the next left.”

An stays still. Water in the carpet creeps over the soles of his shoes. On the other end of the channel, someone steps into water half a beat later, as if copying him from just behind his shoulder.

An old monitor hangs at the corner. Its timestamp reads 06:17, three hours ahead of his watch. On-screen, he stands at this same junction holding the radio. The man raises his left hand. A scrap of paper covers his palm: DON’T LISTEN TO ME.

“Left,” the voice repeats. “Don’t waste time this time.”

The fluorescent hum cuts out. Somewhere ahead, a train arrival chime plays. An knows those four notes; he hears them every evening on the way home. On the monitor, the other man stuffs the paper into his mouth and shakes his head. A thin white light shows beneath the door on the left.

White light leaks beneath the left-hand door.

Hold the radio key: “You go first.”

Turn the radio over and open the door.
